Staying vigilant is a key component of self-defense. We cannot predict the time, place or nature of crimes. It is easy to become complacent and let our guard down. Do not justify complacency by saying things such as “I am only running a quick errand”, or “It’s daytime, nothing will happen.” Keep in mind that often times criminals can hit or or miss. We cannot. Here’s 5 things to always keep on your mind to help you stay on guard.

    Understand The Consequences

Complacency is easy to fall into if you don’t keep is consequences on your mind. If something unfortunate where to happen because your guard was down, the consequences can be devastating. Understand the impact crime can have emotionally, physically and financially on you and your family.

    Make It The Norm

Being alert and prepared should be the norm, not the exception. It should feel uncomfortable if your guard is down. You should feel vulnerable and wanting to get back into your comfort zone of safety and high situational awareness.

    Accept Responsibility For Loved Ones

Understand that scope of your responsibilities. You are responsible for the safety of your loved ones. You can depend on no one to help you in a time of need.

    Have a Realistic Self-Defense Plan

Don’t be stuck in an absolute. Be flexible and willing to compromise when it comes to your actions. If your favorite grocery store is in a sketchy part of town that requires you to go shopping only during the day perhaps you can find a store that is in a better location.

    Enlist Those Around You

Work as a team with those you encounter regularly. Talk with your family and co-workers on how you can help each other be hard targets. Make plans to walk to your car with a group of co-workers. If you jog when it’s dark out enlist a friend to join.

Hopefully these tips will start the thought process and help you keep your guard up all times.
