Protecting Yourself From Date Rape Drugs

An overwhelming majority of sexual assaults involve substances commonly known as date rape drugs. Alcohol is the most common date rape drug. You will not be able to defend against date rape drugs once the symptoms become apparent. Drink safely by focusing on prevention and remaining in close proximity to your friends. Here are some easy-to-implement practices that will allow you to stay safe when drinking in public.

  • Pre-Plan:  Know where you are going, the type of crowd the venue attracts and who you will be with. Put safety first when planning your outings.
  • Never Become Separated From Your Friends: Use the buddy system. Make a pact with your friends that no one gets left alone. You must understand that once you feel the effects of date rape drugs, it is often times too late to get help. If you are out alone or on a date, check in with a friend regularly.
  • Drink Responsibly: Again, alcohol is the most common date rape drug. Do not drink to the point where your judgement and senses are impaired.
  • Always Watch Your Drink: Do not let your drink out of your sight or allow anyone to have access to it. A quick pass of a hand over your drink is all it takes for it to be drugged.
  • Keep Your Drink Covered: Get in the habit of keeping your hand over your drink.
  • Do Not Share Your Drink: Do not let others have a sip of your drink. Again, there are many ways for a determined person to drug your drink. Keep your drink inaccessible.
  • Watch Your Drink Being Made: Go to the bar and order your drinks. Watch them being made.
  • Take Your Drink to the Bathroom: No matter what you are doing, keep your drink with you at all times. Do not trust someone to watch it for you.
  • Alert a Friend and Seek Immediate Medical Attention:  If you feel anything strange, alert a friend and seek immediate medical attention. Do not become separated from your friends.

Keep in mind that most sexual assaults involve acquaintances, not total strangers. Do not let your guard down. Regardless of who you are with, exercise safe practices when drinking in public.
